The Story of the El Peñon Wreck

One of the reasons Tabaiba Wreck Diving is so special is the fascinating history behind the wreck.

The vessel known today as El Peñon was intentionally sunk in 2006 by the local authorities after being carefully prepared for recreational diving. Before sinking, all potentially hazardous materials were removed, making it both environmentally safe and diver-friendly.

Instead of becoming scrap metal, the ship was given a second life beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

A Ship That Was Sunk on Purpose

Unlike historical shipwrecks caused by storms or accidents, El Peñon was deliberately submerged to create a marine habitat and a recreational diving attraction.

This controlled sinking preserved much of the vessel’s original structure.

Artificial Reef Success Story

Marine biologists consider El Peñón an excellent example of how carefully prepared artificial reefs can increase biodiversity.

The ship now supports hundreds of marine organisms and provides shelter for juvenile fish that would otherwise have fewer hiding places on the volcanic seabed.
